ARTISTS COMMISSION
New Hospital Programme
Barts Hospital Phase 1
ARTIST’S BRIEF
Anka Dabrowska
Introduction
Vital Arts is the pioneering arts and health organisation for Barts and The London NHS Trust, charitably funded to deliver arts programmes for the well being of the hospital community. We are currently developing a major public art commissioning programme for the Trust.
Barts and the London NHS Trust is undergoing a major redevelopment programme to replace, and rebuild, two of its principal hospitals; Barts in the City and The Royal London in Whitechapel. This re-development programme is the largest in Europe and will create a new health campus for London of strategic national importance.
Barts, founded in 1123, is the oldest surviving hospital in England. As part of the Trust’s major re-development programme, Phase 1 of the Barts rebuild will open in 2010 with a new state-of-the-art Cancer Wing. The new Centre will serve a community of two million people from all over London and the South East of England. Phase 2 of the Barts rebuild will be completed in 2013 with a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Centre, making Barts the pre-eminent Cancer and Cardiac Centre for London and the South East.
The Commission
The new Cancer Centre at Barts has been designed by HOK and is being built by Capital Hospitals PLC as part of a major hospital building scheme at both Barts and The Royal London hospitals. The new Barts Cancer centre will become the leading NHS Cancer Centre in London, treating upwards of 40,000 cancer patients per year.
The Brief
The artist is commissioned to make a series of small “kiosk” sculptures to be installed in Barts Hospital.
